Andy Peterson – mountain lion survivor – will be in Americus this fall to share his story as the featured speaker at this year’s Season Opener Steak Dinner.
In April 1998, a 24-year-old Peterson hiked up a 7,160-foot summit in Colorado unaware of the danger that lurked along the 3.2-mile trail. It was part of a weekly routine for the former park ranger, who spent his time off at the neighboring Roxborough State Park.
While hiking down from the summit, he came face-to-face with a mountain lion and its fresh kill. It marked the start of a thirty-minute fight for survival.
There was only one way to safety: down the mountain. But the big cat is capable of topping 30 miles per hour. He knocked Peterson down twice, biting into his head with a force greater than 400 psi as it raked its claws against his skin.
The man fought back to his feet both times.
Miraculously and despite heavy blood loss, he made it to the trailhead and to help.
His survival tale is unique – mountain lion attacks are extremely rare. There have been roughly 130 documented attacks in North America since 1980.
Come hear his story for yourself at the 2024 Season Opener Steak Dinner will be held on October 5 at Friendship Camp.
The $20 ticket covers the price of a plate and a raffle entry. This annual event is sponsored by the Friendship Baptist Association.
